Painting What It Feels Like

Here's a recent painting of a place close to where I live. I like to work from rough location sketches instead of photos, although I do use both at times. This image is from a few scratchy sketchbook drawings where I tried to avoid distracting details that are superfluous to the composition. Working like this seems to help in capturing the feeling of what the subject is…in this case, it's afternoon light on a church in Marietta.
